The Department of Tourism (DOT) is currently planning to lure back tourists back to disaster-hit areas. They have tapped various travel agencies and offered incentives for travellers who are planning to take a more meaningful trip to areas affected by typhoon “Yolanda” and the Visayas quake.
By availing of travel packages from the DOT-led "Bangon Tours," the agency said tourists contribute to the rebuilding efforts while also helping grow domestic tourism.
Specially designed tour packages will be made available until the end of February 2014 with travel firms vowing to contribute funds to help disaster-hit tourism sites recover.
"Participating tourist establishments are initially offering special tour packages to 16 tourist destinations…" Tourism Asec. Domingo Ramon Enerio III said.
At least five percent of travel agencies’ and hotels’ net income from packages, nights or rooms sold will be given to groups involved in rebuilding efforts. Those who have signified to participate in the program include Cebu Pacific, The Manila Hotel, Diamond Hotel Philippines, EDSA Shangri-La Hotel and booking site Agoda.com.
Aside from helping disaster-affected areas, DOT said that by choosing local travel destinations for your vacations will also help generate more livelihood for native communities.
Tourists have earlier been urged to return after “Yolanda”, saying the country is still a "fun destination." The government is targeting 45 million domestic travellers in 2014.
"Visit as many of our fun destinations as possible and at the same contribute your share in our country’s recovery," the DOT said in a statement.
The problem with the statement of the DOT is that it did not mention some important details about the promotion. For instance, it is not clear where are the 16 tourist destinations that they are referring to in their statement. Are all of these areas already safe and accessible?
Also, how much does it cost for the tour packages? They are saying that it will help contribute in the rebuilding, but they failed to mention how much the travellers will have to spend in each of those destinations.
