The Legenday "Mang Kanor" and PAGASA

Bagyong Kanor
When the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) named the incoming tropical depression, Kanor, many netizens can't help but snicker.

However, when the weather agency censored "Kanor" on its list of names for tropical cyclones and renamed the next weather disturbance as "Karding," online discussion was stirred anew.

Why the strong reaction against the name "Kanor?"

PAGASA said it removed "Kanor" because of several negative feedback from the public, citing a sex video scandal linked to the name.

Weather forecaster Jori Loiz told ABS-CBN News that they changed it because the name "Kanor" causes "negative thoughts." He said cyclone names should be based on Philippine culture.

This, of course, compelled Filipino netizens to question the move of the weather agency. Social media sites Twitter and Facebook were flooded with humor and questions pertaining to the name.

One commenter said that "if it is culture they want, then Mang Kanor best represent the online porn culture of Filipinos."

But who really is "Mang Kanor?"

"Mang Kanor" was the moniker given by netizens to an old man whose sex video scandal with a young girl spread like wildfire online a few years ago. No one is sure about his real identity but one claim said "Mang Kanor" was a cop and died in 2014.

It was also alleged that "Mang Kanor" is actually a person named Joel Lito "Nicanor" Tiongson, a retired police officer from BLISS Muntinlupa who died because of massive heart attack early this year. The source also alleged that the girl in the video is Jill Rose Mendoza from the same area.

There was also a report that after the video became viral, courtesy of meme makers, online gamers and internet addicts, "Mang Kanor" hid from the authorities, got depressed which eventually led to heart attack.
