Google Put Its Foot Down on YouTube Support

Google YouTube
Both Google and Amazon have been battling around the implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show in the past.

However, as of today, Google is putting its foot down and officially pulling support for YouTube on both the Echo Show and Amazon's Fire TV devices.

"We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services," a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

"But Amazon doesn't carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn't make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest's latest products. Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon."

A person familiar with Google's thinking on the matter told Engadget that a big point of contention had been the fact that Amazon implemented what was essentially a hacked version of YouTube on both the Echo Show and Fire TV. Rather than work with Google to build versions of its apps that work on Amazon's devices, Amazon has been trying to do it itself - a move that cuts out features and also likely affects Google's ability to collect on some of the ad revenue that comes from its videos.
