Wendy’s (yes, the fast-food chain) has shown everyone that it has a funny sense of humor. On 14 April, after Katy Perry returned to Earth from Blue Origin’s all-female space mission, Wendy’s replied to a post suggesting to "send her back" to space. Then, later in the day, Kesha seemed to support the recommendation by posting a photo of herself smirking while sipping from a Wendy’s cup.
Perry was an easy target for hate online after joining the first all-female spaceflight since 1963. Pop stans took issue with how short the trip was, her rendition of "What a Wonderful World" once in zero gravity, and the unveiling of her Lifetimes Tour set list on a butterfly cutout. It is not certain why Wendy’s, of all franchises, decided to jump in and start a war with Perry, but they went in and took a side.
But Kesha’s shade toward Perry might be more personal.
Last year, Perry reconnected with producer Dr. Luke for her album 143, marking the first time the duo — behind hits like "Teenage Dream" and "Hot n Cold" — reconnected since Kesha accused Luke of sexually, physically, and emotionally abusing her in a 2014 lawsuit.
The legal battle caused a large uproar and was dismissed in 2016, leading Luke to countersue for defamation. It wasn’t until 2023 that the two parties settled, with Kesha writing that "only God knows what happened that night" and Luke maintaining his innocence.
It’s not the first time that Kesha has seemed to show her distaste the Perry-Luke reunion. Last June, after rumors started to spread that Perry had started working with the producer, Kesha simply tweeted, "lol." Rolling Stone broke the news of the pair teaming up for 143 with a source saying that "Katy knew exactly the album she wanted to make and put together the team to make it happen."
After the space mission, other celebrities — among them Emily Ratajkowski, Olivia Wilde, and Olivia Munn — also criticized the female crew, which included journalist Gayle King, philanthropist Lauren Sanchez, and NASA scientist Aisha Bowe. "I think it’s a bit gluttonous," Munn said of the trip.
"I think it’s a bit gluttonous. Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they gonna do up there that has made it better for us down here?" said Munn. Good question.
