The State of PHL Internet Connection

State of PHL Internet
Filipino online communities should not be surprised anymore to know that the country was adjudged as having the slowest average connection speeds in Asia Pacific.

The second quarter report of Akamai said that the Philippines ranked 103rd on the list in terms of average connection speeds. Currently, the country only had an average Internet speed of of 2.5 Megabits per second (Mbps) in the second quarter, although this was a 58 percent improvement from year-ago figures.

The Philippines was far behind South Korea, which topped the list, with average speed of 24.6 Mbps. Hong Kong ranked second on the list with an average speed of 15.7 Mbps.

The Akamai State of the Internet Report said the average global connection speed increased by 21 percent in the second quarter to hit 4.6 Mbps, while the global average peak connection speed grew 20 percent to 25.4 Mbps.

In terms of high speed Internet connectivity, Akamai said the Philippines, while showing improvement, was the only surveyed country that did not qualify for inclusion in the second quarter.

"At 430%, the Philippines’ year-over-year increase was particularly strong, as was its 150% quarter-over-quarter increase. However, with such a low high broadband adoption rate and fewer than 25,000 unique IP addresses connecting to Akamai at speeds over 10 Mbps in the second quarter, these large changes do not necessarily represent significant improvements to connectivity within the country," Akamai said.

South Korea topped the list with 78 percent of connections to Akamai at speeds above 10 Mbps. Japan and Hong Kong also had high broadband adoption rates above 50 percent. Meanwhile, both Vietnam and Indonesia had less than 1 percent of connections to Akamai at those speeds.

The globally distributed Akamai Intelligent Platform delivers over 2 trillion Internet interactions and defends against multiple DDoS attacks each day. This provides the online community with unique visibility into Internet connection speeds, broadband adoption, mobile usage, outages, and attacks. Drawing on this wealth of information, the State of the Internet Report provides a distinctive view into today's online trends.
