Hackers Leaked "Super Mario Bros." Movie?

Super Mario Bros. Movie
It was reported earlier this month that Sony Pictures had been toying with the idea of a "Super Mario Bros." movie, according to leaked emails in the wake of a recent attack on the entertainment giant.

The leaked emails were supposedly between Sony studio chief Amy Pascal and producer Avi Arad, Buzzfeed.com reported.

However, the report said Arad denied that the deal has closed.

Buzzfeed cited one email dated Oct. 23, 2014 with the subject line "Mario," where Arad supposedly told Sony studio chief Pascal, "I am the proud father of mario the animated film [sic]."

The report said Arad then forwarded to Pascal images of him with Mario Bros. creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata.

Pascal then reportedly forwarded the email to TriStar Pictures head Tom Rothman. TriStar is a subsidiary of Sony Pictures.

The report also said Arad on 24 October 2014 emailed Sony Pictures Animation President of Production Michelle Raimo Kouyate to thank her for a congratulatory basket.

The basket supposedly included Mario Bros. merchandise, and Kouyate supposedly responded, "Let’s build a Mario empire!"

But Buzzfeed noted this does not automatically mean such a film would be coming soon to theaters, as there is a long process involved.

Besides, the report said the leaked emails did not indicate any filmmakers had been attached to the project.

It added Pascal at one point suggested Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of the Cartoon Network series "Dexter's Laboratory," "Samurai Jack" and "Star Wars: Clone Wars."

Tartakovsky also directed Sony Pictures' "Hotel Transylvania" in 2012.

However, Buzzfeed said a representative for Tartakovsky said the filmmaker "is not involved."

BuzzFeed also noted it could not find any email where anyone at Sony Pictures aired concern about possible conflicts between Sony Computer Entertainment, whose PlayStation is a competitor of Nintendo's gaming platform.
