Hey, World: Why is Annie a Black Girl?

Annie is White
Only a few confused people have signed a Change.org petition asking Target to replace its in-store ads for "Annie" apparel.

Some of the ads show a white girl wearing a US$ 29.99 red dress available in Target's "Annie for Target" collection. In the "Annie" remake currently in theaters, "Annie" is played by Quvenzhané Wallis, who is black.

"These grossly misleading ads are adding to the divide and does (sic.) not give young African American girls aspiring to become actors anything to be optimistic about," the petition reads.

What the petitioner failed to mention is that "Annie" is originally a fictional WHITE character. She's taken from a 20th century cartoon strip which in turn was taken from a 19th century poem. The movie is the one misleading the public by remaking the character as a black girl.

The illogical argument of the petitioner is trying to fool the public that since a black character played Annie in the movies, no other character should depict Annie is other institutions that are not black. Does this mean that if we Re-Release "Frozen" with an Asian princess, only Asians can wear or have "Frozen" attire?

Stupidity appears know no bounds.

Target's mission is to sell stuff, not to encourage the career aspirations of kids. If their "Annie" model was white, it is probably because the store has more white customers than black customers. Did the petitioners ever thought about that?

What a waste of time for a petition. Perhaps someone should apologize to actress Andrea, the original "Annie". Or, instead of wasting time, why not do community service and actually do something that will really help people instead of just griping and complaining and signing petitions.

Just because the U.S. have achieved racial equality does not mean all things previously white are now black. Before the petitioners worry about Annie's skin color, how about they start by taking all photos of Jay-Z, Beyonce, Puffy (or whatever his name is) and simply take out the black and replace it with white - sounds awesome right?
