Trading Your Windows XP Is A Viable Option

Windows XP
Tuesday, 8 April 2014, came and goes with nothing disastrous reported so far. Anybody panicked? Well, some of those who don’t want Microsoft to stop “supporting” Windows XP did.

If you’re still using a computer that’s running this old operating system, you do have options. Several sites offered various ways one can weather the storm. The suggestions ranged from the most obvious of just getting an updated version of XP to the most extreme of stop using your computer with Windows at all.

The next question is, what if all the options available online and in most cases suggestions from tech-savvy friends doesn’t work? What if, for a perfectly good reason (like the fact that upgrading from XP will cost you either money or time, and you have neither), you’re stuck with a computer using XP? What’s going to happen after April 8?

No major disaster of epic proportion will happen, at least for the time-being. Windows XP will continue to work, but it is in the risk department that vulnerability will steadily increase. Microsoft has not failed in reminding all its clients that that Windows XP will no longer be considered a safe place to store digital assets.

Even though the operating system has been repaired (“patched”) literally over 1,000 times, its foundation is as rickety as a wooden car that won’t be able to stand up against the onslaught of modern security threats. The information highway is already riddled with several hi-tech potholes that vintage tires used by Windows XP can easily be pierced. It will only allow unsecured data to be easily stolen, hacked or corrupted.

Hence, if nobody wants to avail of the options offered, it is suggested that owners of the old Windows OS avail of the “cash for old XP machines” offered by several retailers. The offer is not that bad if you really think of it. For instance, Best Buy says that you’ll get "a minimum of US$ 100" that can be put toward any other computer, including a Mac or a Chromebook. The deal runs until 19 April 2014 and the trade-in product should only be laptop.

The Microsoft Store will also give its clients US$ 100 for trading in their old XP relic, desktop or laptop. This money, however, can be put only toward a Windows computer. This would include a Surface (original model), in the event that you’re feeling frisky and want to try the switch to a more mobile Windows 8 device. The offer is good until 15 June 2014.
